Hero Keane puts on big-top super show to wreck Geordies' high-flying leap towards the premiership title. Newcastle United's travelling championship circus parked up at The Big Top but it was Manchester United ringmaster Roy Keane who whipped the Reds back into title shape. The Tynesider's boss Kevin Keegan lamented: "The circus had come to town but the lions and tigers didn't turn up." Not in black and white jerseys they didn't. But in Keane the Reds had the awesome courage of the lion, the fierce snap of the tiger and, with a quality supporting cast, the Irishman was also the top-hatted man in the middle of the ring. Fergie's Verdict It was a really top performance by us. We decided to attack them. We took a risk at times and went for their throats. It paid dividends with a really good performance and a good result. We could have scored more but if you'd have asked me before the game would I have settled for 2-0 then I would have said yes. Winning the game is important and they did it in the right manner. There were important things that helped us like the combination of Keane and Butt. That is vital in the modern day game. The return of Giggs gives us the right penetration in the wider positions and Cantona and Cole have the right chemistry. May and Gary Neville played together in the centre of defence for the first time and were absolutely superb. It was disappointing that May couldn't make the full 90 minutes to relish what would have been a really good experience for the lad. You have to earn the right to be a champion and coming to Old Trafford was a real test for them. We haven't worked our socks off for four years to give everything away. We've had two terrible performances in the last two games. Defensively we have been very disappointing but, in some ways, it is understandable with the changes we've had to make. Irwin's quality of passing was absolutely marvellous. He kept Ginola as quiet as anyone has done this season. We had to pose questions of Newcastle and say to them how are you going to defend against Cantona, Cole and Giggs. That was the key to the game and they didn't handle it. Man of the Match Roy Keane. Full marks for an irrepressible display in every area by the talented Irishman.
